METEOR
TARGET DRONE
These
aircraft were originally purchased by the SA Navy to serve as target drones for
the Navy’s anti-aircraft systems. After
these remotely piloted vehicles (RPV’s) service was discontinued they, like
most other items, gathered dust in hangers and scrap yards and so became
derelicts. A few of these RPV’s
found their way to the Airforce Museum.
Two years ago, four scholars, who are members of the Friends of the SAAF
Museum, were given the task to restore one of these RPV’s.
This aircraft is now ready to be exhibited.
It is remarkable that despite the fact that these four boys had no
formal technical training in the restoration of aircraft, did an excellent job. All the costs involved in the restoration were borne by these
boys them selves.
