Air Force Day Parade at Swartkop on 30 January 2009
The South African Air Force will be celebrating its 89th birthday on 30 January 2009. Although Air Force day is annually commemorated on 01 February, which is the actual day the Air Force was established in 1920, the main reason for this years’ deviation is the fact that 01 February is on a Sunday.
For this years’ celebrations, the Chief of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano decided to follow the same pattern as for 2008, i.e. to have both a formal parade, fly pasts and demonstrations included, as well as a family day fanfare for informal interaction for those who are not officially involved in the proceedings.
For this purpose, an area will be demarcated for those who are not officially involved in the proceedings, to enjoy the day in typical picnic fashion, providing for their own comfort, e.g. food, beverages, sun block/ shades, chairs etc. Members of the public are also welcome to join in on the informalities should they wish to spend the day at Swartkop Airfield in Thaba Tshwane.
In the unlikelihood of adverse weather conditions on the day, the event will be redirected to take place at 28 Squadron’s no 14 hangar. Should this happen, only the Ceremonial Squadron, officially invited guests and recipients of awards and trophies will participate.
Air Force Day Parade 2009 is scheduled to commence at 10h00 on 30 January 2009.
Entrance to the premises for members of the public will be via Trichardt Road (northern gate to Swartkop Airfield).
